Diggs injured; gonna be thin at LB on Thurs

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Green Bay Packers linebacker Na'il Diggs has a partially torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee and will miss at least two weeks.

Diggs left practice Monday on a cart after a pileup during 11-on-11 team drills. An MRI exam Tuesday confirmed the slight tear.

"There's still concern, because he's not back out here," coach Mike Sherman said Tuesday. "At the same time, it's not a surgical issue, which certainly is an advantage for us and for him. I'm grateful for that."

General manager Ted Thompson was somewhat relieved by the diagnosis.

"I don't think it's serious," Thompson said. "The good news is it's not a worst case scenario."

With Diggs out and potential replacement Raynoch Thompson missing both practices to rest a swollen knee, the Packers' No. 1 linebacker unit consisted of Hannibal Navies on the weak side, Nick Barnett in the middle and Paris Lenon on the strong side.

The Packers are already without injured rookie linebackers Brady Poppinga (hamstring) and Kurt Campbell (knee), so defensive coordinator Jim Bates said the remaining healthy linebackers will have to learn multiple positions.

Some will have to play at least two spots during Thursday's preseason opener at Lambeau Field against San Diego.

"That's the only way we'll be able to go this week with the lack of numbers," Bates said.

Wide receiver Javon Walker returned to practice Tuesday morning after injuring his left hamstring Sunday. He caught two deep passes, one from Brett Favre and one from Craig Nall, before sitting out the afternoon

WITH THIS MORE VALUE TO SD.(MY THINKING)

THURSDAY'S GAME 8/11/05

San Diego Chargers - QB Rotation: Drew Brees (1st Q), Philip Rivers (2-3 Qs), Cleo Lemon, Craig Ochs (mop up).

Marty Schottenheimer said Drew Brees probably will play the first quarter of Thursday's game, with Philip Rivers getting the next two. Cleo Lemon and possibly Craig Ochs will play the fourth quarter.

It's "not likely" RB Ladainian Tomlinson will play, Schottenheimer said. No surprise there – the All-Pro running back has only 13 carries in exhibition games during his four-year NFL career.

Green Bay Packers - QB Rotation: Brett Favre, Craig Nall, J.T. O'Sullivan, rookie Aaron Rodgers.

The Packers have been giving rookie QB Aaron Rodgers a lot of snaps in practice. They have him second behind Favre when it comes to receiving practice snaps. Favre practices once a day and receives 50% of the snaps, with Rodgers receiving 25%. In the afternoon session, Rodgers, Nall and O'Sullivan split the snaps evenly.

Nose tackle Grady Jackson remains on the physically unable to perform list.

Secondary thin. The Packers are down to five healthy cornerbacks, and unless they get projected starters Al Harris (thigh) and Joey Thomas (calf) back soon, they're going to be perilously thin at the position.

Linebackers thin.

Jim Bates is the Packers new Defensive Coordinator, their third new one in three years. The defense is running more coverages than the basic two-deep scheme of a year ago.

ANYONE HAVE A CONCLUSION ON THE OTHER QB THAT WILL BE PLAYING??

the Chargers finished up their preparations for the Packers with a brief walk through Wednesday morning. HC Marty Schottenheimer announced that seven players, including LB Donnie Edwards (ankle) and first round draft pick OLB/DE Shawne Merriman (hamstring tightness), would not make the tirp to Green Bay for their Thursday night preseason game against the Packers. Edwards suffered what Schottenheimer called a “first-degree ankle sprain” on Monday. Merriman has experienced tightness in his hamstring and missed practice on Tuesday. First round draft pick DE Luis Castillo, who missed time this week due to a foot injury, will make the trip and is expected to see extensive playing time. In addition to Edwards and Merriman, TE Ryan Krause (foot), OT Courtney VanBuren (knee), WR Malcom Floyd (calf), and OLB Ben Leber (foot) will remain in San Diego.

Most likely the Chargers will be playing the First string Oline for more then half of Rivers snaps, it is safe to say this is what created the value on taking the Chargers as in the underdog. Rivers playing thru the 3rd with the first string OL playing the entire 1st half. No Tomlinson/NO Gates, there really is no rhyme or reason when betting preseason games, any anything can happen in the 4th Qtr. I would think its safe to say SD will have a lead going into it, the only question is by how much and if they can hold it. Green Bay 0-4 ATS last 4 preseason openers scoring 3,0(cancelled game),13, and 3, shows the mentality that Sherman really doesnt put much emphasis on the first preseason game.

The line opened 36 1/2, it is now 38. If you follow the line movement, my conclusion would differ from yours. All of the injuries are on the defensive side of the ball, on both teams. Last game you also had the under, and it blew up bigtime. When these newer QB's are out there, they are throwing the ball, getting accustomed to NFL game speed, and we should have newer QB's for 3/4's of this game. They are not in the game to practice handing off. How many long drives were there last game, in the 2H? Could you explain to me again why the under looks good?

I would think the opposite ACE, as Frog said, all the injuries are on the D. Add the fact that both running games are solid, its highly unlikely they would waste the valuable experience handing off. Both teams would like to see their untested WRs being utilised, not to mention seeing what these back-up QBs can do, they may be starters before too long.

WITH THIS "WORK ROOM" I'M TRYING TO LOOK AT ALL SIDE OF THE GAME AND HAVE EVERYBODYS INPUT.....NOT SAYING I'M BETTING THE GAME OR THE OVER AND UNDER

I SEE THE UNDER AS A LOT OF KEY PLAYERS OUT ON BOTH SIDE AND ALSO PRE-SEASON GAME GO UNDER MORE THAN OVER....Starters go a couple of series or about one quarter; top backups into the second half; then mostly reserves, rookies and free agents the rest of the way. IN THE 1ST WEEK I THINK THE GOAL OF EACH TEAM IS TO SEE HOW PLAYERS PLAYS.....ITS HARD TO BET A PRE-SEASON GAME.....WHEN MOST OF THE TEAM ARE JUST LOOKING AT HOW A PLAYER PLAYS VS THE WIN...........BY SAYING THAT YOU COULD ALSO SAY THAT IT WOULD GO OVER.....BASE ON PLAYERS TRYING TO SHINE MORE.....THANK FOR YOUR INPUT

Not sure about the preseason games going under. Last I checked they were 2-0 over, and this one is getting bet over. The Pack has a ton of defenders out, db's, lb's and dl's. They are scrounging anybody just to get some bodies to play tonight. Both starting rb's are sitters, and backups only get so many carries. The reps are required for the backup QB's to get their timing with receivers/ends/backs during game conditions. I look for Rivers and Cal kid (hopefully not another Boller) to pass often, and as many incompletions as they throw, a lot of stopped clock. Pack shown severe disinterest in this spot, scoring nothing. But again, you could see a lot of scoring in the rain. Rain with no wind is really bad for defenders. And there is a high probability of those conditions. I am sure you will have it all figured out by gametime Ace.

Ace,
I just want you to take a step back and have a deep breath. I feel with your success last year, coupled with the long wait for NFL, you are in a situation of, as they say in football, forcing the Ball. There is no point in making plays just for plays sake and ending up regrettting it. I can tell from your posts that you havent a clue about this game, you are already buying into a bad line, weather is dodgy etc, if this was a regular game you would pass, so why not just say, no bet.
